Harvest Caching Software

Harvest handles the requests of individual browsers, just like other Web caches. However, Harvest also creates relationships between caches by implementing ICP (Inter-Cache Protocol). ICP is an intelligent protocol that works with other caches to get the best possible response time, as well as improve network efficiency. There are two modes of operation, parent and sibling.

Parent caches are larger and usually upstream, i.e., at your ISP. Parent caches will fetch requested data for you and then cache it. Sibling caches are usually similar in size to yours as well close to you on the network. They only inform you if they already have data you have requested; they won't fetch it for you.

The Harvest software exists in a few forms. The commercial product is at http://www.netcache.com/ while the public domain version is Squid, at http://www.nlanr.net/Squid/, which is the version that Connect uses.
