Modem Problem Check-list Here is a
list of common problems and solutions commonly associated with using a modem
to connect to the Internet.
- Do not use a modem throu
gh a PABX - this will cause problems.
- Having other equipment on the same line as a modem can also cause problems.
Especially some versions of the Telecom T-200 touch phone. (The new white
ones with the rubber buttons.)
- Ensure call waiting
is disabled. #43# is the code used to turn it off.
The call waiting tone will hang a modem up everytime.
- Make sure the modem cable you are using supports hardware flow-control,
and that you modem and dialer program are also using hardware flow-c
ontrol.
(also known as RTS/CTS)
- Run you port speeds at or faster than you maximum modem connect speed.
38400 is a good port speed for a 28.8kbs or 14.4kbs modem. If you run your
port speeds faster than 19.2kbs you quite likley need a 16550 ser
ial port
(esp. if you have a PC slower than a 486DX-33) and high speed serial driver.
- Test your modem - does it work with other services. If you have nothing
else to test the modem against, NetComm run a BBS on (02) 878 3755 - use
a terminal p
rogram to dial in, and download some files.
- Test you phone line - Telstra undertake to make all their lines capable
of 9600 (which is still far too slow in my mind). If your line is not capable
of manitaining a 9600 connection - get Telstra to t
est and fix it !
