Dialling in with Windows XP

Important Information

These instructions will guide you through setting up Windows XP Dial-up Networking to connect to your account. Ensure you close all applications before starting. Please have a copy of the original Windows XP installation software handy as it may be required by Windows during the setup process.


Creating a dial-up connection and installing your modem

  1. From the Windows XP desktop, click on the Start button in the bottom left hand corner. 
  2. From the Start menu, click on the Control Panel icon. 
  3. In the Control Panel window, choose Phone and Modem Options.
  4. Select the Modems tab. 
  5. If your modem is listed then go back to the Control Panel and select Network Connections as Windows has detected your modem.
  6. If you modem is not listed click on the Add button.
  7. Click the Next button to proceed using the hardware installation wizard.
  8. At the end of this process you should see that your modem has been successfully detected, if not then consult your modem manual or manufacturer.
  9. From the Start menu, click on the Control Panel icon.
  10. Select Network Connections.
  11. The New Connection Wizard window will appear.
  12. Click on the Next button.
  13. Select Connect to the Internet
  14. Click on the Next button.
  15. Select Setup my connection manually.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Select the modem you are using.
  18. Click Next.
  19. Type in the name of your ISP e.g., AAPT
  20. Click Next.
  21. Type in the MegaPOP number 0198 307 150
  22. Type in your username.
  23. Type in your password.
  24. Repeat typing in your password.
  25. Click Next.
  26. Click Finish.
  27. To connect to the Internet from now on click on the Start button.
  28. Click on Connect To.
  29. Click on Connect.
  30. Click on the button called Dial.
  31. A box will appear showing you are dialing the MegaPOP number. 
  32. The modem should then dial in and make a connection to our system. The modem will make a series of squelching noises. This is called handshaking and is normal.
  33. Once dialed, a box will appear verifying your username and password.
  34. After verification you will be connected to the Internet. When connected you can run Internet programs such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer to browse the web. 


Remember that you are billed for the time that your connection is open. Please ensure that you close your connection when you have finished.
