Dialling in to your account with Windows NT 4.0

Important information

This document provides a step by step guide to help you connect to your account using Windows NT 4.0. It explains how to set up Dial-Up Networking and the Remote Access System (RAS) Device (in most cases, a modem for a workstation). Please ensure you have a copy of your original Windows NT software handy because it may be required during the setup process.

Step 1 Installing Dial Up Networking, Your Modem and the RAS Device

  1. Double click on My Computer then Dial-up Networking.
  2. If Dial-Up Networking has not been installed you are prompted to install it.
  3. Click on Install to start the installation process.
  4. When Windows NT has finished installing Dial-Up Networking and RAS, you may see the Add RAS Device screen which prompts you to install a modem if you have not already done so.

Dial-Up Networking and RAS are now successfully installed. Continue immediately to the next section, Setting Up the RAS Device.

Step 2 Setting Up the RAS Device

  1. The Remote Access Setup screen is displayed.
  2. Click on Configure to display the Configure screen.
  3. Click on the Network button to display the Network Configuration screen.
  4. Click on OK and then click on Continue to install RAS.
  5. Restart your computer when prompted and continue immediately to the next section, Setting up Dial-Up Networking.

Step 3 Setting up Dial-Up Networking

  1. When the computer restarts, double click on My Computer and then Dial-Up Networking.
  2. A message indicating that the phone book is empty is displayed.
Click OK to start the Phonebook Entry Wizard.
  3. Complete the first screen as follows:

Click on the Basic tab.

  1. Type Connect (or a name of your choice) in the Entry name field.
  2. Type the number of your Point of Presence (POP) in the Phone field.
  3. Ensure Use another port is deselected.
  4. Check your modem is listed in the Dial Using field.
  5. Click Configure
  6. Check the speed is set correctly for your modem.
  7. Tick only Enable hardware flow control.
  8. Ensure Disable modem speaker is deselected.

Click on the Server tab.

  1. In the section entitled Network protocols, ensure that TCP/IP is the only option checked.
  2. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
  3. Check Enable software compression in the lower section.
  4. Deselect Enable PPP LCP extensions.

Click on the Script tab.

  1. Select None
(If you later experience problems connecting try selecting Pop up a terminal window instead.)

Click on the Security tab.

  1. Select Accept any authentication including clear text.

You don't need to do anything with the X.25 tab. Click on OK to return to the Dial-Up Networking screen.

Dial-Up Networking is now set up.

Connecting to your Account

  1. Click on Dial to display the Connect screen:
  2. Type username@yourmailserver.com.au in the User name field,
  3. Type your password in the Password field.
  4. Leave the Domain field blank.
  5. If you want Dial-Up Networking to remember your password the next time you dial in and connect, click on the Save password box. You should only do this if your computer is stored very securely.
  6. Click on OK to connect to your account.

The modem should then dial in and make a connection to our system. The modem will make a series of squelching noises. This is called handshaking and is normal. When connected you can run Internet programs such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer to browse the web.

Remember that you are billed for the time that your connection is open. Please ensure that you close your connection when you have finished.

Problems?

If you have followed these steps carefully but are experiencing problems, try removing all dial-up software and working through the process again.

If you still cannot make the connection, please call Dialup Support (Enternet, ConnectNet or Smartchat) on 1300 73 2222 or (if you can) send email to support@connect.com.au. Ensure you have your username, password and secret word handy when you call.
