Dialling in with Windows 95/98/Me
Important Information
These instructions guide you through setting up Windows
95/98/Me Dial-up Networking to connect to your account. Ensure you close all
applications before starting. Please have a copy of the original Windows
95/98/Me installation software handy as it may be required by Windows during
the setup process.
Installing Network components
Step 1 - Checking which components are installed.

In the Windows 95/98/Me desktop, double click on the My Computer icon.

In the My Computer window, double click on the Control Panel icon.

In the Control Panel window, double click on the Network icon.
-
Click on the Configuration tab.
-
Ensure that the following Network components are installed on your system.
-
Client for Microsoft Networks
-
Dial-Up Adapter
-
TCP/IP
Continue with Steps 2, 3 and 4 to install any components not yet installed.
Step 2 - Installing Client for Microsoft Networks

Click on the Add... button
-
From the network component list, double click on Client.
-
From the list of Manufacturers, click on Microsoft.
-
From the list of Network Clients, click on Client for Microsoft Networks.
-
Click on the OK button.
Step 3 - Installing Dial-Up Adapter
-
Click on the Add... button
-
From the network component list, double click on Adapter.
-
From the list of Manufacturers, click on Microsoft.
-
From the list of Network Adapters, click on Dial-Up Adapter.
-
Click on the OK button.
Step 4 - Installing TCP/IP Protocol
-
Click on the Add... button
-
From the network component list Double click on Protocol.
-
From the list of Manufacturers, click on Microsoft.
-
From the list of Network Protocols, click on TCP/IP.
-
Click on the OK button.
Setting up TCP/IP
-
Double click on the TCP/IP component. (From the Network dialogue
box)
-
Click on the IP Address tab.
-
Check Obtain an IP Address automatically.
- Click on the WINS Configuration tab.
- Check Disable WINS Resolution
- Click on the Gateway tab.
- Click on the Bindings tab.
- Check Client for Microsoft Networks
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- The Property section should be None
- Click on the DNS Configuration tab.

Click on the OK button. (To close the TCP/IP Properties dialogue
box)

Click on the OK button. (To close the Network dialogue box)
-
Windows will prompt you to restart your computer. Click on the Yes
button to restart.
When your system has restarted you are ready to create a Dial-Up Networking
(DUN) connection.
Creating a Dial-Up Networking Icon
-
From the Windows 95/98/Me desktop, double click on the My Computer
icon.
-
In the My Computer window, double click on the Dial-Up Networking
icon.
-
In the Dial-Up Networking window, double click on the Make New Connection
icon.
Note: If there is no installed modem you will be prompted to install
one.
-
In the Type a name for the computer you are dialing field, type
Connect.
-
Ensure the correct modem is selected.
-
Click on the Next button.
-
Type the Telephone Number of the Point of Presence to dial.
Note: If an Area Code is required, type it in front of the Telephone
Number.
-
From the Country code pull down menu, select Australia (61).
-
Click on the Next button.
-
Click on the Finish button.
Setting up Dial-Up Networking
-
In the Dial-Up Networking window, click once with the right mouse
button on the Connect icon.
-
From the pop up menu, select Properties.
-
Ensure that the Use country code and area code box is unchecked.
-
Click on the Server Type... button (or tab for newer Windows
versions) .
-
Complete the screen as follows:
-
For the Type of Dial Up Server select PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5,
Internet as.
-
In Advanced options, check only the Enable software compression setting.
-
In Allowed network protocols, check only the TCP/IP setting.
-
Click on the TCP/IP Settings... button and complete the screen as
follows:
-
Ensure that the Server assigned IP address box is checked.
-
Ensure that the Specify name server addresses box is checked.
-
Set Primary DNS to 203.8.183.1
-
Set Secondary DNS to 192.189.54.17 (Vic, Tas, S.A., NT., and W.A) or 192.189.54.33 (Qld and
N.S.W.)
-
Set Primary WINS to 0.0.0.0
-
Set Secondary WINS to 0.0.0.0
-
Ensure that the Use IP header compression box is checked.
-
Ensure that the Use default gateway on remote network box is checked.
-
Click on the OK button. to close the TCP/IP Settings dialogue box.

If you clicked on the Server Type... button then:
-
Click on the OK button. to close the Server Types dialogue box.
-
Click on the OK button. to close the Connect dialogue box.
Creating a Shortcut
-
In the Windows desktop, double click on the My Computer icon.
-
In the My Computer window, double click on the Dial-Up Networking
icon.
-
In the Dial-Up Networking window click once with the right mouse
button on the Connect icon.
-
From the pop up menu, select Create Shortcut.
-
Select Yes to place a shortcut on the desktop instead.
Your Dial-Up Networking connection is now ready to use.
Making a connection
-
In the Windows desktop, double click on the Shortcut to Connect
icon.
-
In the User name field, type your email address (username@yourmailserver.com.au)
-
In the Password field, type your password.
-
Click on the Connect button to make a connection.
The modem should then dial in and make a connection to our system. The
modem will make a series of squelching noises. This is called handshaking
and is normal. When connected you can run Internet programs such as Netscape
Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer to browse the web.
Remember that you are billed for the time that your connection is open.
Please ensure that you close your connection when you have finished.
