Dialling in with Windows 2000

Important Information

These instructions guide you through setting up Windows 2000 Dial-up Networking to connect to your account. Ensure you close all applications before starting. Please have a copy of the original Windows 2000 installation software handy as it may be required by Windows during the setup process.


Creating a Dial-Up Networking Icon

  1. From the Windows 2000 desktop, double click on the My Computer icon. 
  2. In the My Computer window, double click on the Control Panel icon. 
  3. In the Control Panel window, double click on the Network and Dial-up Co...... icon. 
  4. The Network Connection Wizard window will appear. 
  5. Click on the Next button.
  6. Select the second radio button Dial-up to the Internet.
  7. The Internet Connection Wizard will appear.
  8. Select the bottom radio button I want to set up my Internet connection manually etc.,.....
  9. Click on the Next button. 
  10. Select the top radio button I connect through a phone line and a modem.
  11. Click on the Next button.
  12. The next window window that appears ask you to choose a modem, (if you do not have one installed, you will have to install one via the Modem Control Panel). If a modem has been already installed, Windows 2000 will show the name of it in this window.
  13. Type in the telephone number of the POP that you are dialing into (a list can be found at http://info.connect.com.au/docs/network/popresence.html ).
  14. If you are dialing locally you do not need the Area Code or Country Code, remove the tick from the box called Use area code and dialing rules.
  15. Click on the Advanced button.
  16. Select the tab at the top called Addresses.
  17. Select the radio button called Always use the following.
  18. In the box called Primary DNS Server type the following: 192.189.54.33 (for ACT, NSW & QLD customers) or 192.189.54.17 (for VIC, SA, TAS, WA & NT customers).
  19. In the box called Alternate DNS Server type in 203.8.183.1
  20. Click on the OK button to return to the screen where you typed in your phone number.
  21. Click on the Next button.
  22. Type in your username in the Username box (this is the same as your email address e.g., joe@office.net.au).
  23. Type in your password in the Password box.
  24. Click on the Next button.
  25. In the box called Connection Name type in the name of the service provider e.g., AAPT
  26. Click on the Next button.
  27. The last window advises you that the process has finished.
  28. Click on the Finish button
  29. A screen will pop up ready for you to connect to the internet.

Creating a Shortcut Icon to AAPT

  1. From the Windows 2000 desktop, double click on the My Computer icon. 
  2. In the My Computer window, double click on the Control Panel icon. 
  3. In the Control Panel window, double click on the Network and Dial-up Co...... icon. 
  4. In the Network and Dial-Up Co...window click once with the right mouse button on the AAPT icon (or whatever name you chose).
  5. From the pop up menu, select Create Shortcut
  6. Select Yes to place a shortcut on the desktop instead. 
Your Dial-Up Networking connection is now ready to use.

Making a connection

  1. In the Windows 2000 desktop, double click on the Shortcut to AAPT icon. 
  2. In the User name field you should see your email address.
  3. In the Password field you should see some *'s that represent your password.  
  4. Click on the AAPT button to make a connection. 
The modem should then dial in and make a connection to our system. The modem will make a series of squelching noises. This is called handshaking and is normal. When connected you can run Internet programs such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer to browse the web.

Remember that you are billed for the time that your connection is open. Please ensure that you close your connection when you have finished.
