Setting up the Shiva Dialer
The Shiva Dialer is the component of your Dial-Up software which actually enables
your computer to communicate with other computers via your phone line. Use
these instructions to check your settings if you are experiencing any difficulty
making an Internet connection after installing the software.
Checking the Shiva Dialer Settings
- Open the folder containing you Dial-Up software.
- Double-click on the Dialer icon to display the Dialer window.
- Click the Properties button.
- Click the Locations tab.
- In the Locations section
- Select Tone or Pulse dialing depending on which method
your phone line uses. In most cases, this will be Tone.
- In the Dialing from Location section
- If you need to dial an extra digit before the phone number to obtain
an outside line from the phone you are dialling from, type the digit in
the For outside line access, dial field.
- Please do not use the Call Waiting facility - it does not work properly.
If you have a Call Waiting facility on the line you use, disable it before
you connect your modem each time by entering the disabling code. For Telstra
Call Waiting the disabling code is #43#. Remember to turn Call Waiting
back on after you finish your Enternet call. The code to turn Call Waiting
back on is *43#.
- Check that the correct phone number for your Enternet Point of Presence
is entered in the Provider phone number field.
- Click the General tab.
- In the When connected section
- By default, whenever you activate the Dialer, Netscape Navigator also
opens. If you prefer not to have this, deselect Automatically start
Netscape Navigator.
- The Disconnect after XX minutes field defines how many minutes
of inactivity must pass before you are automatically logged off. Five minutes
is suggested but you may set this to a longer or shorter time if desired.
- In the Logging in section
- Leave both fields deselected.
- In the Dial on demand section
- By default, the Dialer automatically creates a connection when you
open Netscape Navigator. If you would prefer to change this, deselect the
Dial on demand option. If you do this remember you will need to
open the Dialer as well as Netscape Navigator to use the Internet.
- Click the Modem tab
- In the Modem Type section
- Your modem make and model is displayed. If this is incorrect, click
Change to launch the Modem Wizard.
- In the Modem Configuration section
- Select which of your computer's communication ports the modem is attached
to from the Port pull down menu.
- If you wish, alter the Speaker Volume of the modem here.
It is a good idea to retain some volume - the noises provide valuable feedback
on how your connection is proceeding.
- Select the speed (baud rate) of your modem from the Maximum Speed
pull down menu.
For a 14.4kbps modem, select 19200.
For a 28.8kbps modem, select 38400.
For a 33.6kbps modem, select 57600.
- Click the Service Provider tab
- Type 203.8.183.1 in the Primary DNS field.
- Type 192.189.54.17 (Vic., Tas, S.A., NT, and W.A.) or 192.189.54.33 (Qld, and N.S.W.) in
the Secondary DNS field.
- Click OK to save these settings.
- Close the Dialer window.
Connecting to your account
Depending
on the settings you have selected (see Checking the Shiva Dialer Settings,
step 5) there are three alternative ways to connect to your account.
- Double click on the Netscape icon to open Netscape Navigator and activate
the Dialer in a single step.
- Double click on the Dialer icon to open Netscape Navigator and connect
to your account in a single step.
- Double click on the Dialer icon to connect to your account without
opening any Internet applications

- Type your password in the Password field. Ensure Caps Lock
is off.
- Select the location you are currently dialling from.

extra number, for example 0, to obtain an external line from your phone
your phone number will be displayed with extra digits at the beginning,
for example, 0W 9281 4700. To temporarily dial a different
phone number enter the new phone number here.
