Dialling in to your account using Mac OS 8.0
These instructions guide you through the steps you need to follow to set
up MacOS 8 to connect to your account.
Checking you have the components installed
Step 1 Checking the components are installed
- From the Apple menu, select Control Panels.
- Do you see PPP?
- If yes, continue to "Setting up your connection".
- If no, continue with step 2.
Step 2 Installing any missing components
To install PPP
- Place your MacOS 8 CD in the CD ROM drive
- Open the Software Installers folder
- Open the Open Transport/PPP folder.
- Double click on the Installer icon.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install PPP.
Setting up your connection
Step 1 Setting up PPP
- From the Apple menu, select Control Panels.
- From the Control Panels menu, select PPP.
- In the Name field, type your full User ID (username@yourmailserver.com.au)
- In the Password field, type your account password exactly as provided. It is displayed in dots on the screen to keep it secure.
- Click once to remove the tick beside Save password and the computer will prompt for the password each time a connection is made. It is insecure for the computer to remember your password.
- Type the number of your Point of Presence in the Number field.
- Click once on the Options button.
- Click once on the Protocol tab and complete the screen as follows.
- Display a tick beside Allow error correction and compression in modem.
- Display a tick beside Use TCP header compression.
- Ensure Connect to a command-line host is deselected
- Click once on the Connection tab and complete the screen as follows.
- Display a tick beside Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications.
- Display a tick beside Flash icon in menu bar while connected.
- Ensure all other options are deselected.
- Click once on the Redialing tab and complete the screen as follows.
- From the Redial menu, select Redial main number only.
- Select the number of times you wish your computer to try redialling if the line is engaged and the time between each attempt.
- Click OK to save your settings.
- Now you can close the PPP Control Panel by selecting Quit from the File menu.
Step 2 Setting up TCP/IP
- From the Apple menu, select Control Panels.
- From the Control Panels menu, select TCP/IP
- From the Connect via menu, select PPP.
- From the Configure menu, select Using PPP Server.
- In the Starting domain name field, type yourdomain.com.au
- In the Name server address field, type 2oe.8.183.1. On the next line type
192.189.54.17 (Vic., Tas, S.A., NT, or W.A.) or 192.189.54.33 (Qld, N.S.W., ACT).
- From the File menu, select Quit to close TCP/IP and save your settings.
Step 3 Setting up your Modem
- From the Apple menu, select Control Panels.
- From the Control Panels menu, select Modems.
- From the Connect via menu, select the port into which your modem is plugged, usually the Modem Port.
- From the Modem menu, select your modem make, model and speed. If you can't find a your modem, or one similar to it try 'Hayes Accura 288'.
- For the Sound setting, click once in the circle to display a black dot beside On.
- For the Dialing setting, click once in the circle to display a black dot beside Tone.
- From the File menu, select Exit to close the Modems screen and save your settings.
Making a connection
To connect to your account:
- Double click on the browse the Internet or Mail icons installed on your desktop to launch the appropriate application and connect to your account, OR
- Open your Internet software, for example Netscape Navigator, which will then initiate a connection to your account.
Note: If these methods do not work, follow these instructions to open your account automatically when you open the software.
- From the Apple menu, select Control Panels
- Select the PPP control panel
- Click once on the Options button.
- Click once on the Connections tab.
- Click once to display a tick in the box beside Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications.
- Click OK.
- Click once on the Save button.
Closing a connection
When you have finished your Internet session, you must close your connection as well as your Internet applications. Click once on the Disconnect button in the PPP control panel.
